Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Anita Chisholm was an American politician who, in 1968, became the first black woman to be elected to the United States Congress, and the first African American woman to run for president (and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's nomination) in 1972. Chisholm represented New York's 12th congressional district, a district centered on Bedford–Stuyvesant, for seven terms from 1969 to 1983.
